Extensional rheometry of model liquids: Simulations of filament stretching

چکیده

Polymeric liquid bridges are known to fail during extension. This phenomenon of failure seemingly calls into question the operating principle filament stretching rheometers. In these devices, a polymeric sample is initially placed between two plates. The then stretched bridge by moving plates apart in specified way. We here show that steady extensional viscosity can be measured if separated such way stretch rate symmetry plane kept constant, even for liquids highly prone instability. Moreover, reliable measurements stress relaxation phase obtained as well. conclusions based on simulations number constitutive equations, including Newtonian liquid, Oldroyd-B model, differential non-stretch Rolie–Poly and integral Doi–Edwards model with without associated dynamics.

Filament-stretching Rheometry of Complex Fluids

■ Abstract Filament-stretching rheometers are devices for measuring the extensional viscosity of moderately viscous non-Newtonian fluids such as polymer solutions. In these devices, a cylindrical liquid bridge is initially formed between two circular end-plates. The plates are then moved apart in a prescribed manner such that the fluid sample is subjected to a strong extensional deformation. As...

Constant Force Extensional Rheometry of Polymer Solutions

We revisit the rapid stretching of a liquid filament under the action of a constant imposed tensile force, a problem which was first considered by Matta & Tytus [JNNFM vol. 35, pp 215-229, 1990]. A liquid bridge formed from a viscous Newtonian fluid or from a dilute polymer solution is first established between two cylindrical disks. The upper disk is held fixed and may be connected to a force ...

Numerical simulation of extensional deformations of viscoelastic liquid bridges in filament stretching devices

Large extensional deformations of viscoelastic fluid columns in filament stretching rheometers are studied through numerical simulations up to Hencky strains of greater than o=4. The time-dependent axisymmetric calculations incorporate the effects of viscoelasticity, surface tension, fluid inertia, plus a deformable free surface and provide quantitative descriptions of the evolution in the fila...
